flashback of the week

the walkmen – everyone who pretended to like me is gone – we’ve been had

it’s 2002. the new york boys release their debut album. it’s a stunner and if you aren’t a fan, then, wait, no you must be. we all are. this track is still my all-time favorite walkmen song and when the cold weather comes, it’s a staple. i’m sure i’ve developed at least a couple of swollen lymph nodes screaming these lyrics.

the walkmen release new album in september

at last, another album from our beloved brooklynites the walkmen. their fifth studio album is called lisbon and will be released september 14th on fat possum. frontman hamilton leithauser told pitchfork in february, “there is a lot of stuff that’s elvis-sounding, like early elvis and sun records kind of sounds. we have just so many eight-tracks over the last year; the list is just unbelievable… the instrumentation is very simple, and then there’s a very loud vocal and a softish drum. there is a slapback guitar on everything. i don’t know if it will end up being used at all, but i think that was a starting point for a lot of stuff that paul looped with the guitar.” sounds like a treat of an album.

the walkmen sign to a new label

the walkmen have signed to a new label, fat posssum, which is home to other greats, andrew bird, the black keys, wavves, a.a. bondy, jaguar love, and musical legends like al green and jimmy lee harris. the walkmen are back in the studio working on their next album and will be playing some shows in march for new york city locals. blizzard or no blizzard, i’m sure the walkmen will be warming up some lucky new yorkers next month.
