fans of the flaming lips have probably heard over the last few years the rumor they’d be turning yoshimi battles the pink robots into a broadway musical. front man wayne coyne told wenn, “we’ve talked about doing something with yoshimi battles the pink robots now for about five or six years. they did it with tommy and des mcanuff was the director, and he’s the one that wants to do yoshimi.” “we’ve actually pursued it to a certain extent and I think that where it sits is really just me deciding to dedicate a couple of years of my life to making it.” “it’s a strange opportunity but I know we’ve talked about it since 2003. we would incorporate all the songs and probably write some other music that told a little bit more of a story. i guess my biggest dilemma is there’s not really a story with yoshimi battles the pink robots; it’s just a series of unconnected songs that sound connected when you listen.” “that being said, i don’t think it would be overly impossible to draw some connections and come up with some type of emotional storyline.” the realization of this broadway musical could be some time away, but exciting nonetheless, eh? i’m years and years over liking green day, but american idiot, the broadway show, has gotten good reviews after it premiered this week. so let’s hope for another broadway revolution lips style in the near future. i’d much rather listen to two hours of yoshimi battles the pink robots than anything green day any day.

did anyone watch christmas from mars a couple of years ago? anyone…? well, if you did and want more of the loud, psychedelic mindfucking provided to you by the flaming lips, you are in luck – they are making another movie. their first movie took seven years to make, so who knows when the next one will be released, but they are already working on the project, including the film’s score. frontman, wayne coyne, says he is recruiting “real actors” and “celebrities” for this movie. that would be a treat, yeah? we might be waiting another child’s lifetime for the next cinematic experience from the group, but regardless, i’m sure it’ll be a doosey.

if you are a student of the university of central oklahoma’s academy of contemporary music, you’re in luck. steven drozd, who is an alumni of the academy, and the band’s manager, another alumni, will teach a master class and open it up for an interview and q&a. last semester these lucky bastards at the university got a master class from the who’s roger daltrey. as if there aren’t already enough reasons to wish you were back in college.
