song of the day

midnight lion – all greatness stands firm

this unsigned glasgow duo used to be parts of atlas skye and drive-by argument. i’m a little sick of lion in the titles of band names, but it’s certainly better than drive-by argument. regardless, this song rocks. it’s a pounding synth anthem that is begging for a phat remix. it’s like the bravery (when they were awesome) got drunk with peter gabriel, had sex, and midnight lion popped out nine months later.

magnetic fields documentary film trailor

the magnetic fields were followed for 10 years by directors kerthy fix and gail o’hara to make a documentary, strange powers: stephin merritt and the magnetic fields. the trailor is up for viewing. peter gabriel, neil gaiman, and sarah silverman make apperances. the official world premier will be at this year’s SXSW.

peter gabriel covers bon iver, arcade fire, radiohead

peter gabriel’s next release, scratch my back, is a cover album, wait for it, of bon iver, arcade fire, radiohead, the magnetic fields and the like. i for one cannot wait to hear more. stereogum has a stream of his cover of bon iver’s “flume”. not bad old timer. not bad at all.

the stone roses – i wanna be adored

it’s 1989. i’ve just acid-washed my levis and tucked my movie stub for say anything into my back pocket to remind me i’ve got to give peter gabriel another listen. michael jackson was just named the king of pop and tom cruise sure can make a mean cocktail even though he can be awfully mean to his idiot savant of a brother. it’s a happy world with my new nintendo game boy, and disney keeps knocking it out of the park. look at this stuff, isn’t it neat, wouldn’t you think my collection’s complete… i can’t stop singing that damn song and boy, what a funny rick moranis is shrinking his kids. oh. wait. not so happy world for ted bundy and the students at Tiananmen Square and what is this i keep reading about something called a greenhouse effect…? but we didn’t start the fire and the president doesn’t like broccoli, so what? just hope that wall in berlin finally falls. with woodstock ’89 around the corner, shouldn’t we all just be adored?
