amy winehouse found dead

the troubled british songtress was found dead in her london home yesterday. there is no determined cause of death at the moment. she was 27. this was a life taken far too soon and a great talent we’ve lost.

song of the day

outfit – two islands

these liverpool boys are making some of the the most exciting music around right now. it’s wild beasts meets roxy music meets a little disco. you have to listen to appreciate their high brow tunage. their new single is catchy and eccentric and a six minute treat to be enjoyed with your best falsetto. www.everynightidressupasyou.com

ela orleans – deluxe double fold -  i know

night people records released a summer compilation. it’s chock full of warm weather gems, including today’s song by new york’s ela orleans. it’s a subtle tune, but rich and perfect for laying on a car hood on a hot late night. if the heat’s got you beat, then this song should be the nice breeze you are wanting. you can also find this song on her split 12″ with dirty beaches. www.elaorleans.wordpress.com

song of the day

big troubles – romantic comedy – misery

the jersey boys are back with their sophomore album in september. smashing pumpkins’ influence seems to be far reaching these days. this song is more of the jersey boy’s 90′s inspired rock goodness, although their lo-fi has gotten hi-fi. the fuzz is still there, but it’s polished and sounding quite peppy. siamese dream would be proud. www.myspace.com/inbigtroubles

song of the day

m83 – hurry up, we’re dreaming – midnight city

france’s m83 are back with their sixth album, a double album in fact, this october and have also announced a north america tour this fall. they’ve been around for a decade now and it’s seems like they just get better. the new album was inspired by smashing pumpkin’s melon collie and the infinite sadness , which means expect the epic. this new single couldn’t be a better way to hype up their synth loving fans. www.ilovem83.com/midnight-city

peter wolf crier -garden of arms – right away

i featured these boys year last when they released their debut. they are back this fall with their sophomore album. this single from garden of arms shows the boys are stretching their legs and experimenting with their folk roots. the change is good, as well as the production value and i will surely be getting the new album right away come september. www.peterwolfcrier.com

flashback of the week

badly drawn boy – the hour of the bewilderbeast – once around the block

it’s 2000. damon gough, the english skull cap wearing and mercury prize winner releases his debut album. it’s quiet and powerful and made him an instant talent to reckon with. i’ve memorized this album from it’s first second to its last. a decade later, it’s still an all-time favorite. there is not one mediocre song on the album. damon released his sixth album last year.

video of the week

black lips – arabia mountain – new direction

atlanta’s flower punk boys released their sixth album last month. mark ronson has certainly made the band’s sound more clean and easy listening, but with the release of this new video, they show they are still crazy rocker boys, at least in front of a green screen. enjoy their worldly and outer worldly flight.

song of the day

pepper rabbit – red velvet snow ball – murder room

the l.a. duo are releasing their sophomore album next month. this is the second single they’ve released from the new album and not only does it have a great title, but it’s a quirky pop tune that shines despite its dark undertones. it certainly satisfies the morbid fantasies we have about eliminating certain people from our lives. on that note, cheers and a happy sunday. www.myspace.com/pepperrabbit

song of the day

real estate – days – it’s real

the jersey boys are back with a new album this october on domino records. it’s an easy, catchy, and jangling real gem whose chorus you’ll be singing long after the song is over. they’ve got a gift for indie pop and their sophomore effort should prove as solid as their debut. the 7″ for this single is out in september.  www.dominiorecordcousa.us

song of the day

mathieu santos – massachusetts 2010 – i hear the trains coming

ra ra riot’s bass player has announced a debut solo album and released this delightful track from the debut. it’s no surprise it’s got a great bassline. it’s highly addictive and surprisingly warm. the bouncing of the delayed vocals is sheer fun and i can’t imagine a better way to kick off a killer friday. the album is out next month. www.facebook.com/pages/Mathieu-Santos

song of the day

discopolis – timber merchants

how the hell these three scots are still technically unsigned is beyond me. their self description is, “sounds a bit like digital fucking.” color me sold. it’s an accurate picture to paint while listening to a synth lover’s ultimate pleasure. the summer is certainly better served with their tunes around. grab a cold one and shake your boots off. www.facebook.com/discopolismusic

song of the day

the drums – portamento – money

the brooklynites are releasing their sophomore album this september and have released the first single yesterday. they do catchy so well, it’s kind of stupid. fans will not be disappointed with this new infectious jig. the lyrics fit in very well with the state of our country’s economy, so i’m sure a good percentage of us can sing them loud and proud. www.thedrums.com

song of the day

elite gymnastics – ruin 1 – o m a m o r i

this electronic minneapolis duo just dropped a double ep release that’s got everyone talking. the two eps share song titles, but the similarity pretty much ends there. the songs on ruin 2 are dramatically slowed down and elusive reinterpretations of their ruin 1 versions. regardless, both eps are quality listens and i’ve got to hand it to the boys for delivering on a novel idea. www.elitegymnastics.tumblr.com

song of the day

silver swans – forever – mother of pearl

this san francisco duo released this new track and it’s dripping with sweetness and is so dreamy, it will make you question whether or not you are still in bed. they’ve got a full album coming out later this year, but this gem should satiate you until then. rumor has it they record in their bathroom. personally, i do all of my best singing there, too. www.myspace.com/silverswansband
