girl in a coma – exits and all the rest – smart

the san antonio girls are back with a new collection of songs this november. their name suggests an affection for the smiths and their sound suggests… well, the same. heck, they’ve even opened for morrissey. this song is so smithsy and adorable, you’ll be bopping your way well into the weekend. www.girlinacoma.com

fairewell – poor, poor grendel – born under a bad sign

there’s not a lot info on the world wide web about london’s johnny white, the man behind today’s lo-fi pop goodness. his soundcloud merely states, “killer of sunday’s dogs”, but he’s got his debut album coming out this december and an endearing video on youtube for this gem. it’s a winter snow song. although it’s fall in the states, somewhere in the world it’s raining snowflakes, so enjoy. www.facebook.com/pages/Fairewell

tv girl – girls like me

the san diego boys are back with their first physical release, a 7″ on small plates records that is worth every penny. it’s pop gold that is as sweet as anything they’ve done and if you don’t have the 7 buckaroos, you can grab the two new tracks on their facebook for 2 bucks, so get her done. www.facebook.com/tvgirlz

still corners – creatures of an hour – circulars

here’s another track from the londonites’ upcoming debut album. it’s a two minute organ-led jam that possesses a bat for lashes vibe irresistible to moody song lovers. this is an elusive and gorgeous 126 seconds that should leave you wanting more. www.subpop.com/releases/still_corners/

majical cloudz – majical cloudz ii – dream world (featuring grimes)

this monreal project comprised of pop winds’ devon welsh and matthew e. duffy released a new album early this summer. i loved the track when i first heard it, but it’s been lost in all the jumbo of my music collection and i have literally just recovered it for all our delights. it’s dreamy with a capital D, as the song title would suggest, and features the vocal angelic-ness of grimes’ claire boucher. it’s the perfect way to start off the week. www.myspace.com/majicalcloudz

flashback of the week

serge gainsbourg – jane birkin/serge gainsbourg – l’anamour

it’s 1969. the famous frenchman releases his tenth album, the notorious duet album with his lady at the time, jane birkin, who “orgasms” at the end of the album’s opener. his musical career spanned four decades and his influence will span the ages to come. my parents had his records. now i have his records and will enjoy them until the end.

video of the week

battles – gloss drop – my machine

the directing duo, daniels, are pretty unstoppable at the moment. i’d be confident to say the are the best music video directors out there right now. their latest is for new york’s math rock gurus, battles, who released their sophomore album early this summer and this track features gary numan, who is also in the video. it’s a seemingly one shot take centered around an escalator. it’s brilliant. enjoy.

song of the day

the peach kings – trip wop – little things

this l.a. duo won alternative apparel’s and paste magazine’s best unsigned artist last year and the masses are slowly catching on to their self described “gypsydelic” sound. they just released a new ep featuring this easy and instantly loveable doo wop winner. put your feet up and enjoy the little things. you can stream the whole ep on their bandcamp.

trailer trash tracys – wish you were red

this london quartet have re-recorded this 2009 track for a new double sided 7″ releasing on domino’s double six next month. it’s extra dreamy and plenty fuzzy to satisfy shoegaze lovers. for reverb addicts, turn up, and enjoy while hanging your head out the window. www.trailertrashtracys.com

summer camp – welcome to condale – better off without you

the london duo announced their debut album a few weeks ago and dropped this hella fun 80′s flashback of a tune last week. the album is about those awkward, yet highly memorable teenage years, so open a yearbook, reminiscence and prepare to do some bopping around. they paired up with pulp’s steve mackey again for the full length, so expect more goodness come november. www.facebook.com/summercampmusic

song of the day

the moor – warm winter

this l.a. duo dropped their debut album last month and the two are showing a lot of promise. this album opener is a standout, a retro 60′s inspired lounge song that should bring out your most sensual mod. this is mellow gold. they are ones to watch, so straighten your bangs and shine your loafers. easy does it. www.thedilettantes.net/the-moor

song of the day

braids – peach wedding

the canadians are splitting a 7″ with purity ring’s crazy good single, “belispeak” next month on fat possum. it’s a song they’ve been playing in their live set for some time. those in need of a psychedelic and whimsical fix will be pleased. it’s a woozy and moody ambient dream that is as sweet as it is addictive. www.braidsmusic.com

song of the day

acid glasses – my pale garden

memphis’ nick burk is dropping his new single next month on stroll on records and it’s all kinds of crazy goodness, catchy and warped at the same time. it’s a four-eyed hallucinogenic for the ears, no doubt. it gets most interesting three quarters of the way in. it’s not your speakers. www.acidglasses.tumblr.com

song of the day

papercranes – dust season (javelin remix)

papercranes is rain phoenix’s, yes of the famous phoenixes, band. she released a new album, let’s make babies in the woods, this year. master remixer, javelin, took one of the album’s better songs and made it danceable and ultimately better, which he’s known to do. www.papercranesmusic.com

flashback of the week

radiohead – ok computer – no surprises

it’s 1998. the band releases their third album in 1997 and this gem was their third single the following year. this video is one of their most memorable to date. who doesn’t remember what thom yorke’s face looks like in a plastic bubble filled with water? if you’ve forgotten, here’s a reminder.
