flashback of the week

the left banke – walk away renée/pretty ballerina – walk away renée

it’s 1967. the new york baroque pop quintet release their debut album. it was one of the most successful debuts of the decade and has just been recently re-issued by sundazed. you don’t hear harpsichords like the baroque pop of the 60′s or flute solos in pop music anymore. shame.

video of the week

crystal antlers – two-way mirror

the long beach boys just dropped their sophomore album and this video for the title-track. it’s one psychedelic cartoon trip that is probably best suited under the influence of a hallucinogenic for those who don’t scare easily. it’s a crazy ride done very well with some cute characters getting f**ked up. enjoy.

song of the day

loney dear – hall music – my heart

sweden’s ballad king emil svanängen is back with a new album this october. if you want your heartstrings pulled, he is the man to go to. this new track is a sweeping orchestral beauty that builds well with background church bells that are spot on. this should be the perfect fall album, so grab it for the scarf season. www.loneydear.com

real estate – stroked: a tribute to this is it – barely legal

the strokes’ this is it came out ten years ago on this day. to honor the new yorkers’ iconic album, stereogum has released a tribute compilation. it’s pretty fantastic. the whole album has been rein-visioned and some of my favorite songs have been given fresh play. it’s a heck of a lot of fun. a highlight is real estate’s take on “barely legal”. grab the tunes here.

song of the day

lana del rey – video games

new londoner lizzy grant, aka lana del rey, is about to tear up a storm. she’s been garnering comparisons to nancy sinatra and although the similarity is obvious, she’s something all her own. her voice is to.die.for and this track is sultry with a capital s and retro with a dark edge. in short, it’s completely enchanting and to boot, she’s more than easy on the eyes, so if she’s not huge in a hot minute, color me confounded. www.myspace.com/lizzygrant

song of the day

neon indian – era extraña – fallout

the master of chillwave is back with his sophomore album in september. this is the first single, a romantic and whimsical synthy dream that evokes the best of the 80′s. he’s certainly hasn’t lost his haziness, but he’s showing restraint and he’s created an inviting tune that has everyone hot for the album release. www.neonindian.com

song of the day

geoffrey o’connor – vanity is forever – whatever leads me to you

mr. o’connor is known for fronting aussie lo-fi pop band the crayon fields, but now he’s venturing out on his own and is releasing his solo debut in september. his first single “now and then” is a chilly, slow, and sultry synth heavy slickster. this second single is sultry still, but it’s got mid-tempo pep that makes it irresistible. throw on your shades and strut. www.facebook.com/GeoffreyOConnorMusic

st. lucia – the old house is gone

this new brooklynite by way of south africa recently signed to the heavyroc music team and has released a couple of debut singles, my favorite being this one, his first. it’s tropical flare meets snyth dreaminess with drive. translate as perfect for summer. grab a sweet blended something and bendy straw for maximum enjoyment. www.soundcloud.com/st-lucia

song of the day

pickwick – myths, vol. 3 – blackout

these white boys from seattle got mad soul. they’ve released six songs on three volumes on their bandcamp and each song is an ode to the best of the 60′s with just the right touch of contemporary flare. this is feel-good music at its best. turn up this diddy and get your monday swagger on. www.myspace.com/pickwickmusic

flashback of the week

p.m. dawn – of the heart, of the soul and of the cross: the utopian experience – set adrift on memory bliss

it’s 1991. the jersey r&b brothers release their debut album which features one of my guiltiest pleasures of all time. i still know all the words to this song. i’m sure sampling spandau ballet’s “true” was a huge factor in me falling so head over heels for this song during puberty, being the devoted fan of the 80′s that i’ve always been. judge me, but i still listen to this and get my rocks off.

video of the week

fulton lights – 3 songs – staring out the window

baltimore’s andrew spencer goldman released a 3 song ep last year, aptly titled, 3 songs, and he’s just recently released a video for one of those of three songs. every once in a while a video comes along that truly does something that has never done been done before. here is such video. it’s awesome. it’s got crows. with arms. playing instruments. and singing. enjoy.

song of the day

gold leaves – the ornament – cruel & kind

seattle’s grant olsen from arthur & yu has a new project, gold leaves, and he’s set to release the debut album next month. fans of fleet foxes will feel right at home with the rich and gorgeous modern folk inspired tunage. sundays are lazy days and lounging around will be better served with this quiet beaut. www.facebook.com/pages/Gold-Leaves

chrome sparks – my <3 – all there is (feat. steffaloo)

jeremy malvin, an ann arbor college student, has released his debut ep as chrome sparks. the kid’s got hella talent and his blips and musical sensibility are impressive. you can listen to the whole ep on his bandcamp. i don’t know what they’ve got in the water there in ann arbor, but it breeds some great electronic tunage. www.facebook.com/chromesparks

amy winehouse found dead

the troubled british songtress was found dead in her london home yesterday. there is no determined cause of death at the moment. she was 27. this was a life taken far too soon and a great talent we’ve lost.

song of the day

outfit – two islands

these liverpool boys are making some of the the most exciting music around right now. it’s wild beasts meets roxy music meets a little disco. you have to listen to appreciate their high brow tunage. their new single is catchy and eccentric and a six minute treat to be enjoyed with your best falsetto. www.everynightidressupasyou.com
