goldendust – after the smoke grew thick

this duo is from iowa city. they are set to release an album this summer on night people and this track is certainly for creatures of the after midnight hour. its dark synths and affected vocals are perfect for a late night with a full ashtray and an empty house. there’s not much about these two on the world wide web, but keep your ears peeled.

howler – this one’s different – i told you once

this new minneapolis band of boys led by jonathan gatesman signed to rough trade and released their debut ep earlier this year. it’s making a crawl around the web, but the ep is finding it’s legs and the buzz is spreading fast. their sound is vintage rock and roll with poppy melodies. it’s proper noise indeed. they’re working on their debut album now. www.myspace.com/howlerjams

new york’s class actress is finally releasing their debut album october 18th. that’s right, mark that date in your calendars right now kids. this track from the debut is more of their addicting 80′s synth stylings that we love and as always, front woman elizabeth harper is one sexy singer and she can keep me anytime. www.classactress.tumblr.com

flashback of the week

portishead – dummy – sour times

it’s 1994. the bristol trip-hoppers release their debut album. i’ve listened to this album so many times, i could probably recite it from beginning to end without a thought. other bands in this genre, good as they may be, will never match the sound these guys have. now, i may be biased, but beth gibbons is a goddess and they are still one of the coolest bands of all time. their last album third was released in 2008 to considerable critical acclaim.

video of the week

delay trees – about brothers

this video has been around for a hot minute, but what’s good is good, so here tis. the video stars the director, teemu erämaa’s, real life brother and was inspired by him as well. it’s a heart warming four minutes of animation come to life and erämaa’s brother could have one of the greatest smiles on earth. the song is from the debut self-titled album of finland’s shoegaze rising stars.

part time – what would you say – in this filthy city

san fran’s david speck is releasing his debut album july 5th. it’s an 80′s homage and hall & oats would be proud. this track from the album is an easy cool jam that should be enjoyed sporting knee bearing shorts and gossiping poolside. i wouldn’t hesitate to grab the album when it comes out on mexican summer. www.facebook.com/pages/PART-TIME

capital cities – safe and sound

this l.a. duo just released their debut ep. it is poppy sunshine and perfect for a summer friday romp around the citay. the horns on this track  are a real treat.  you should find your feet tapping shortly after you hit play and most likely feel your rear move off your seat by the end of these infectious three minutes. www.facebook.com/capitalcities

the rapture – in the grace of your love – how deep is your love

frick yeah, the rapture are back. it’s been five long years since they’ve released a new album. in the grace of your love is out this september, so we’ve got all summer to drool. this first track is not, as the title would lead you to believe, a bee gees cover. it’s better and a post-punk disco gem that sounds like the rapture we love. www.therapturemusic.com

song of the day

spector – never fade away

these london boys dropped their debut single yesterday. it’s a soaring pop song led by frontman fred macpherson’s crooner voice. this is a joyful and romantic tune that should melt someone’s knees out there. it’s a hell of a debut, so put a rose in your mouth and don juan detuesday. www.myspace.com/spector

song of the day

ennui – formation of tides – coconino

pittsburgh’s ennui beautifully overloads on the busy yet soothing coconino. despite the diversity of sounds and instruments, nothing seems out of place.  it’s so easy to lose track of who’s who in today’s bright and blossoming synth world, and ennui make damn sure that they stand out in your mind as one of the brighter stars. getting lost in their layers upon layers of sound is a guarantee, and that is where the real treat lies. http://ennui.bandcamp.com/

song of the day

night manager – pizza pasta

if you can’t tell already, we’ve got a soft spot for female-led lo-fi groovage, and brooklyn, new york’s night manager serves up a hot plate of everything we know and love. just as finely sharp as it is clouded and fuzzy, night manager beautifully blends two styles into one delightful dish. it’s easy to get lost in the dreamy nostalgia of this song, and that’s why we love it. be sure to ask for seconds and just wait til you see what’s  for dessert. http://nightmanager.bandcamp.com/
