blood orange – dinner

dev hynes, yes, dev hynes of lightspeed chapmion and of test icles, is back with his other moniker, blood orange. this time he teamed up with grizzly bear’s chris taylor and boy did they fancy themselves something slick with just enough 80′s synth to make it extra juicy. the 7″ was released this week and the full length is out this summer. bloodorangeforever.tumblr.com

dag för dag – boo – boxed up in pine

swedes are the coolest and this cool swedish sibling duo released their debut full-length album this week. it’s eclectic, dramatic, brooding, and ultimately quite beautiful. there a few staggering standout tracks, this tune being one of them. the pair of them singing together is a real treat, but the call and return on this song is especially awesome and the strings really win me over in the second half. all of the above = happy friday. www.dagfordag.com

man mantis – sea ambulance

this madison, wisconsin dj/producer released this e.p. last month and his new full length, cities without horses, a couple of weeks back. they are both slowly making their rounds on the world wide web, but believe me, keep your ears out for this man insect. he’s got severe talent with beats and he mixes his genres, oh so well. i’m still diggin on the title track from the e.p. and have no doubt you’ll be diggin it, too. www.myspace.com/mantiskills www.manmantis.bandcamp.com

vacationer – trip

philly’s vactioner is the side project of body language. the music is what the name would want you to hear, tunage you want to vacation to, complete with calming bird sounds. it begs for a hammock on some sunny shore under a shaded palm tree with fruity drink in hand. as the weather warms, pick your summer vacation destination and put this on your mix. www.vacationermusic.com

reptar -houseboat babies

these athens, georgia boys caught the ear of ben allen, the producer for animal collective and gnarls barkley, and mr. allen put out this single last month to the delight of their dancing fans. comparisons to mgmt and passion pit are warranted, but don’t pigeonhole these dancing dudes. they surely have something all their own. www.myspace.com/reptarathens

birdie hilltop – the ready dance

this swiss-born, new york city based one man project has this new track floating around the web. it is, as everyone else says, devastatingly beautiful. it’s a simple bedroom pop tune that is so sweet, i can feel the internal cavity forming already. this should provide an easy start to the work week.  www.birdiehilltop.com

flashback of the week

depeche mode – violator – personal jesus

it’s 1989. this was the first single from the english boys’ seventh album which was released the following year. it is one of their most successful and recognizable tunes with it’s driving bass and complete badassness. they’ve released 12 albums to date, although violator remains their best selling album. i will always name them in my list of favorite bands of all time and this song in particular could be heralded as an anthem of mine.

video of the week

explosions in the sky – take care, take care, take care – trembling hands

the texas boys are back with their sixth album this tuesday, oh yeah. they never seem to write a bad note and the new album is no different. the songs get to the “explosions”, so to speak, quicker than we are used to, but they are all still cinematic beauts, solidifying their place in music legend. www.explosionsinthesky.com

the one am radio – Heaven Is Attached By a Slender Thread – In a City Without Seasons

this l.a. project led by Hrishikesh Hirway just released their fourth album. it was inspired by late night walks in los angeles, so you insomniacs might relate. there are a few standouts on the dreamy and electronic album, this song being one of them. it’s a lovely tune and living in hell.a, i must say there are no seasons, and sometimes you do want more colorful foliage, so preach on hirway, preach on. www.myspace.com/theoneamradio

tom vek – leisure seizure – a chore

today’s song is in video form. it marks the return of one of my favorites artists evah who has been m.i.a for the last five years, britain’s tom vek. his new album (hoorah!) is out in june. tom plays the host of a t.v. show and the man does not disappoint. it’s a worthy return after half a decade. welcome back mr. vek. www.tomvek.tv

cassettes won’t listen – kevinspacey – the echoes

former hip hop businessman for definite jux jason drake is back with his third album this june. he flexes his sampling muscles on the new record and on this new track. this ain’t no hip hop, but it sure is some darn good electronic music and anything that references kevin spacey perks my ears up. cassetteswontlisten.com

we are enfant terrible - explicit pictures – filthy love

french trio we are enfant terrible released their debut album last week. it’s eclectic electro that’s full of wonderful blips and beeps meant to make you move. they used a nintendo gameboy as an instrument on this album, that’s right. this is one of their stand out tracks, gritty and begging for a dark warehouse dance floor, it’s one to keep for the weekend or help you with a some monday attitude. www.weareenfantterrible.com
