song of the day

futurebirds – dirty d

this athens, georgia six piece released an ep a couple of weeks ago and to the delight of their fans, the ep is getting remastered and being set for a re-release in april. exciting eh? this track from the ep is an easy harmony huggin, whiskey lovin, kind of song – the likes of which only true southern boys can master. yes, you can have your grits and eat it, too. www.myspace.com/thefuturebirds

flashback of the week

real life – heartland – send me angel

it’s 1983. the aussies release their debut album and this debut single, which i’m sure has been on everyone’s mixtape at one point or another. it’s truly a classic and was remixed in 1989 to top the charts again. for those of you who saw, rad, the 1986 bmx movie where the two leads dance at the prom on their bikes to this song, i’m sure you have an extra special place in your hearts for this gem.

the wombats – this modern glitch – anti-d

the liverpool trio are set to release their sophmore album, the modern glitch, this april. this video for their single from the forthcoming album is a sure way to get us on board. it’s a seemingly one shot take of frontman matthew murphy roaming the streets of a surreal suburbia. it’s eye candy and one you’ll want to watch again. enjoy.

song of the day

metronomy – the english riviera – the look

the english blokes are back with their third studio album this april. they’ve got two new members and possibly their most infectious song to date. this track is the follow up to “she wants” and golly, it’s one sexy, danceable groove. the organ-y synth in this song is nothing short of amazing. coupled with the kenny g synth in the last half of the song, this track is fast repeat button candidate. www.myspace.com/metronomy

song of the day

greatest hits – fun girls

this funky brooklyn duo have released a new 7″ and this b-side does the song title justice. it’s fun with a capital take it all off and get sweaty with your best pop and lockin moves on a friend’s linoleum floor. someone could have said this track was released in the 80s and i would have been none the wiser. it’s dripping cheese and i love it. www.myspace.com/halfnelson3xremoved

song of the day

the milk – (all i wanted was) danger

this four piece from essex hasn’t really breached the us yet, but they are on everyone’s “to watch” list overseas. these white boys got some serious soul and motown funk in their mix, sprinkled with a little tom jones’ lovin. top that with a little cee lo green action and by golly, they’re just a knee slappin’ good time. get out you swingin partner and kick up your heels. www.myspace.com/thisisthemilk

song of the day

tv on the radio – nine types of light – will do

i let out a resounding “hell yeah” when news broke earlier this month that tv on the radio will be releasing their long awaited new album in april. yesterday, seattle’s 107.7 premiered their first single and oh boy, it’s goooood. easy and soulful, it’s a subtle, yet charming way back to our hearts, but back they are. www.tvontheradio.com

new animal – fires in the backyard

this atlanta duo just released their debut album on bandcamp for free. yes, for free, and really, free or not, it’s a must have. it’s now a whopping 50 cents, so get out your change purse and delve into their poppy, pseudo-psychedelic deliciousness. this particular track is a woozy slow jam that is so right on, i’ve been listening to it non-stop and melting everytime. newanimal.bandcamp.com

the fresh & onlys – secret walls – do you believe in destiny

the san fran boys confirmed yesterday the release of a new ep coming out in april. this fresh single from secret walls still sounds like it’s being played out of a 60′s jukebox, but it’s sweet as it is jangly. the boys have slowed their roll and i like it. they start their north american tour at the end of the month. www.myspace.com/thefreshonlys

song of the day

kontravoid – native state

i don’t know much about this ontario project, except that this song is all kinds of badass. it might be a more suitable song for a weekend dance party littered with plastic cups full of umnentionables, but i guess president’s day is as good as any day for a dirty dance party, eh? this is experimental electro done hellah well and for those of you with an ear for such a jam, you are in for a wicked treat. www.myspace.com/kontravoid

flashback of the week

the cars – just what i needed

it’s 1978. the boston boys release their debut album and were an instant hit. it’s a hell of an album. you all know this song and i’m sure love it just as much as i do. they are releasing their seventh album this year with a new vocalist and bassist. yes, that’s right. their last album came out in 1987. just as long as they don’t give up the synth, i’m on board.

video of the week

radiohead – the king of limbs – lotus flower

i officially love the new radiohead album. a good thirty or more listens later, it’s really found it’s place in my heart. this is the video they released on friday morning with the the release of the album. if you are not one of the millions of people who’ve already seen it, it’s just thom dancing and twitching in his usual way, but really, do you need more?

song of the day

lykke li – wounded rhymes – love out of lust

you all know i love this swedish beaut. her sophomore album is out next week, hoorah! here’s another fantastic jam from it. it’s a slower song than the previous two singles from wounded rhymes, but damn if it ain’t a sexy and sultry beast of a song where her voice takes center stage. happy lusting. www.lykkeli.com

song of the day

radiohead – the king of limbs – lotus flower

i’m sure most of you are chewing up the new radiohead album. this is my favorite song on the short, mostly electronic the king of limbs. if you have hesitated at all, don’t. it gets better with each listen, as most of radiohead’s album do. i’ll shut up, so you can get listening. here’s to a weekend of radiohead. www.thekingoflimbs.com
