cut copy – zonoscope – take me over

this single has been out for a hot minute, but it’s a slow day and i am need of a good hustle, so here is the aussies’ new slighty tropical, definitely synthy dance flavor to get your weekend jazzed properly. their new album is out next month and i’m sure you are all as stoked as i am. even though it’s winter, i plan to shake down a good margarita tonight. www.cutcopy.net

devotchka – 100 lovers – 100 other lovers

it’s been three years since denver’s cinematic quartet has graced us with a new band album. frontman nick urata has been scoring films as of late, so we are all in for a treat march 1st, when they release their fifth studio album. am i excited? absofrigginlutely. this track is from the forthcoming album. it’s everything i love about the band. it’s simply lovely and sounds like roses. www.myspace.com/devotchkamusic

song of the day

cold pumas – dawn lobby

sometimes you want a shit ton of guitar reverb and noise you can scream and jump around to. sometimes is right now. brighton’s cold pumas are back with a new 7″ this year and it’s a pump up your bangs and scruff your stache to do some damage kind of song. i friggin love it. it’s got enough post-punk elements for those who want something more melodious and you can actually hear the vocals now, so the whole thing is win win. www.myspace.com/coldpumas

song of the day

tapes ‘n tapes – outside – badaboom

these minneapolis boys released their third album last week. this is the album’s opener and gem. the album, as a whole, is a nod towards the tapes ‘n tapes of the loon, their debut album, and i’m nodding too. the album is a return to their lower-fied selves. it’s self-released and self produced. you can hear their regained confidence and stride. this song is just down right awesome from beginning to end with surprises to please your ears. www.tapesntapes.com

silk flowers – ltd. form – a brush through the dust

this new york trio is set to release their sophomore album at the beginning of next month on post present medium. the buzz is loud. fans of joy division and scott walker will find themselves at home with these boys’ industrial darkwave post-punk broodings. i personally love lead singer, aviram cohen’s richly deep baritone and i hope you do too. this is not for the bubblegum poppers, but it’s certainly beautiful in all it’s synth glory. www.myspace.com/silkflowersnyc

flashback of the week

faith no more – angel dust – easy

it’s 1992. the epic (ha) san francisco band released their fourth album and this b-side as a single at the end of the year. it’s a well known cover of the commodores song. at this point, i don’t know which version i like better. both are kinda spectacular. the video for this song is at the least, amusing. it’s pretty much the band chilling with a gang of trannies. there you go. love it.

video of the week

alcoholic faith mission – let this be the last night we care – my eyes to see

this danish group released their third album last year to pretty good reviews. this video for their single, “my eyes to see”, one of the stand out tracks on the album, is powerful and serves the dynamic song well. the song reminds me of the best sounds of cloud cult and the video as simple as it is, is better than good, it’s moving and definitely inspiring. enjoy.

akron/family – s/t II: the cosmic birth and journey of shinju tnt – so it goes

portland’s rockin folk trio are back with their new and fifth album early next month. word on the street is they wrote the album in japan in a cabin next to an active volcano and then recorded it in an abandoned train station in detroit. you can’t get much cooler than that kids. this single from the new album is an impressive, poppy folk song disguised as a shining, thumping rock song. you are guaranteed to love it. www.akronfamily.com

song of the day

the veils – troubles of the brain – bloom

after almost a decade with respectable rough trade records, the veils decided to form their own label and are releasing a new 6 track ep at the end of the month. you readers know that i am loyal fan of these londoners and i beyond myself with excitement for their material. this is their new single from the ep. it’s classic veils with a driving guitar line and as always, mr. finn andrews’ vocals are powerful and emotive. to summarize, it’s friggin bloody great. www.theveils.com

rainbow arabia – boys and diamonds – without you

this married echo park couple are releasing their much anticipated debut album march 1st. this is a first taste of their world-music inspired electronic pop goodness. it’s utterly delightful and completely danceable with plenty of synth to satisfy. this is the perfect type of song to jump start a great weekend if ever i heard one. tgif. www.myspace.com/rainbowarabia

song of the day

expensive looks – nothing more

this is a shimmering and earnest new track by new york’s alec feld. his previous stuff is more on the psychedelic house tip, but this is bedroom pop through and through. it’s a break up song with a cheerful musicality and thus is, irresistibly charming. just under three minutes, it’s a short and sweet tune you can skip and cry to. not many opportunities to do that, eh? www.myspace.com/expensivelooks

dan deacon scoring new coppola film

dan deacon has been at the forefront of electronic music for the later half of the last decade. he’s been announced as the composer for francis ford coppola’s next film, twixt now and sunrise, which has been described as a “gothic romance.” the film will star one of my favs, val kilmer, alongside ben chaplin and elle fanning. much like the announcement of daft punk scoring disney’s tron, i have wet myself with shock and excitment. i’m sure twixt now and sunrise will be a better film than tron, so let’s hope this great musician’s talents do not go to waste.

pablo – designed

new york city’s pablo has a new ep around the corner and they have released this new single to get us jonsing for the upcoming tunage. the band is headed by paul schalda who’s got a voice to murder and passion enough for all of us. this is an acoustic driven song with an infectious simplicity and charming harmonies that are hard to not love, especially knowing paul’s own father had his hand on the electric at the end of the track. www.myspace.com/pablomusic

song of the day

arches – this isn’t a good night for walking

this new jersey duo have a new six and a half minute blissful tune that should get your mouth watering for their debut album set to drop this summer. the song’s title is correct, this is not a good night for walking, but rather a stroll and maybe an occasional skip or two, whilst listening to this leisurely and whimsical gem that flows like a cool stream in summer. in short, it’s simply lovely. www.myspace.com/archessongs

craft spells – after the moment

this stockton, california duo released a hell of a single, “party talk” last fall and more throughout the year. they dropped this new single last week and it’s equally lovable and utterly danceable. they are releasing their debut album this spring and i would expect the buzz to get loud for these two boys. mondays are hard, but this is sure to get your butt out of bed and into a good day. www.myspace.com/craftspells
