flashback of the week

elbow – cast of thousands – fallen angel

it’s 2003. this british quintet releases their second album. this is their first single from the album. it’s a more up tempo song than the bunch on their debut and they prove to do up tempo well. they’ll win the acclaimed mercury prize in 2008 and quite frankly, if you are not a fan of elbow, what the hell is wrong with you?

video of the week

no age – everything in between – fever dreaming

the l.a. art-punk duo released their third album last fall. the album has been well received by all and as a whole, is more melodic than their formers. this song, however, is their tried and true noisy selves at their best. the video is nothing short of brilliant and definitely one of my favorites in a long time. it’s a simple, yet bold concept which those who suffer from claustrophobia can relate to.

song of the day

the first loves – sweet cliché

the following comparison to joy division will be obvious once you listen to this track, but i’d be silly not to state the facts – these guys must have ian curtis locked in a shed somewhere feeding him breadcrumbs and picking his musical brain. excuse the blasphemy. these unsigned london boys have been true to their influences and damn, if they aren’t excellent at what they do. i don’t know much about them, but get out your black suspenders, this is post-punk done right. www.myspace.com/thefirstloves
