video of the week

olöf arnalds – innundir skinni – surrender

this icelandic songstress released her sophmore solo album this year. it’s a gorgeous, delicate, and memorizing album fit for anyone who appreciates a white winter and a warm cup of tea or really, anyone who appreciates eccentric and beautifulm modern folk music. she is accompanied by other icelandic goddess, bjork in this track. you can’t miss her voice. the song itself is a stunner and the video is a hypnotic dance between her and a partner shot on super 8. it’s quiet and intense and damn, if she ain’t one gorgeous broad.

theophilus london – flying overseas featuring devonté hynes & solange knowles

i don’t post a lot of hip hop, but that don’t mean i don’t like it. not at all. new york city’s theophilus london’s debut last year was definitely a fresh and exciting album. this new track from his forthcoming album was recorded in park slope, brooklyn, home to many of my close friends, and is a dreamy, juicy track i’ve had on rotation all week and this sunday i’m feeling extra funky fresh, so there ya go. he collaborated with other favorite of mine, lightspeed champion and miss solange knowles, yes sister to beyonce, and the end result is pretty bomb. theophiluslondon.net

song of the day

tape deck mountain – secret serf – p.i.

these san diego boys might just be living up to their promise. they released their debut album last year to mixed reviews. it was unarguably, though an album that demonstrated these boys did have taste and talent. their new ep is out early next year and this track from the ep is that potential realized. it’s broody. it’s catchy and i am a huge fan of the fuzzy guitar riff in this song. it’s raining here in hell.a and this is the perfect song for a cold, gray day, and a good book.

song of the day

bikini – ripjds – american mourning

this new york duo is making fast rounds on the world wide web with this tune. it’s an electro pop gem that you really can’t help but move to. they just released their new ep last week and this is definitely the stand out track. put on your slick kicks, find a good 5 foot radius on a linoleum floor, and get sloppy tonight. www.myspace.com/bikinii

song of the day

say hi – um, uh oh – devils

formerly known a couple of years ago as say hi to your mom, this seattle resident is releasing a new album at the beginning of next year.  it will be eric elbogen’s seventh album and it’s definitely safe to say he’s an indie veteran at this point. he’s been a hit and miss for me over the decade, but this new track from the album is a hit fo sho. short, sexy, and wicked, it’s a whiskey sort of song and those are the best types of songs, aren’t they? pour a wet one and kick up your boots. www.sayhitoyourmom.com

evan voytas – tomorrow night we’ll go anywhere – tomorrow night we’ll go anywhere

this l.a. dude just released a new ep and it’s jam after jam of electro pop goodness with some hip hop and disco sensibilities and in my opinion, it’s his best stuff. when i have been feeling funky this week, this song has been my go to. it’s the title track of the ep and it’s da shizz ya’ll. it’s also the middle of the week and having gone through some particularly trying situations thus far, i’m ready to peace the next couple of days and get to the weekend already with this sexy track blazing the way. www.myspace.com/evanvoytas

high highs – open season

i have been falling for this song ever more this week. this aussie duo really made a beautiful song here and it’s certainly does invoke some sort of high. they’ve been playing for several years, but only got serious in this last one and we should expect a debut album from them soon. their cover of wild nothing’s “live in dreams” is also a stunner of a song. you can listen to it on their myspace.

song of the day

pomegranates – one of us – anywhere we go

this cincinnati band released their third album a couple of weeks ago. it’s easy on the ears and quite the solid album. it’s dreamy, lush, and absolutely worth a good listen. this track is one of my favorites. the first half of the song is pure indie rock delight and then three and a half minutes in, it gets really wonderful. i’ve got this track on repeat today and loving it more and more with each listen. these four boys are solid and this is a sure way to start off a solid week. www.myspace.com/pomegranatesart

flashback of the week

the cure – disintegration – pictures of you

it’s 1990. the british boys release their last single from their eighth album released the year prior. disintegration is arguably their best album, but let’s be real, all their albums are all good. i have been saving this flasback for the right moment cause they are so near and so dear to me and with the colder weather, i always get an obsessive need to listen to this song, so it’s time. it’s one of favorite cure songs and i’ve lost count of how many times i’ve watched this video. it’s definitely special and there’s something about robert smith’s red lipstick and the snow that makes the whole thing magical.

video of the week

games – that we can play – shadows in bloom

daniel lopatin, otherwise known as oneohtrix point never, and joel ford of tigercity have teamed up as a new project called games and they released an ep at the beginning of the month. it’s a retro 80′s synth dream. it’s fun and catchy as hell at times. this video for “shadows in bloom” is just like their ep, quirky, 80′s, and definitely fun.

song of the day

rusty willoughby – cobirds unite – c’mon c’mon

this seattle resident has been a musician for two decades, notably with former bands pure joy and flop, but his solo stuff is the meat of this greatness and he’s been largely under the radar. he released a new album at the end of september and it’s perfect fall music. this track is gorgeous and begs for you to put your feet up to enjoy a warm cup of joe and relax on a sunny sunday. the violin and sweet harmonies are extra inviting and if you’ve got a swing, i’d swing away. www.rustywilloughby.com

song of the day

james pants – darlin

this multi-instrumental wonder has been a favorite of mine for the last couple of years. he is releasing a new album next year and this is a first taste. it’s a just like the title would suggest, a darlin of a song. it’s fuzzy and thumping and catchy, like everything he does well. it’s a beautiful weekend ahead and nothing says a good time, like some james in my pants. oh yeah. www.myspace.com/jamespants

song of the day

dreams – forgotten thoughts – in dreams

this duo is from portugal. and yes, the title is correct, they are dreamy, and hazy and lush, and f*in good. they’ve got an ep releasing here at the beginning of next year and a whole slew of wonderful songs on their myspace. i’ve spent a good part of my day listening to them all and damn, if not a one is bad. their cover of joy division’s “she’s lost control again” is impressive. this track is an airy and synthy dream of a song. ha. on a side note, i highly recommend playing this song immediately after my wednesday post, sauna’s “comfort slave”. you’ll be pleased at how well the two songs go together. happy tgif. www.myspace.com/dreamsdontloveyou

song of the day

keep shelly in athens – in love with dusk – running out of you

this duo is from athens, greece. they are slick and they are cool and clearly have at least a couple of portishead albums between the two of them. they are releasing their debut ep at the beginning of next month as a 500 copy limited vinyl release on family forest records. this is cold weather music, meaning it’s moody, creepy, and beautiful. so head over to insound and get your copy now. enjoy with sweaters and mitts. www.myspace.com/keepshellyinathens

suana: song of the day

suana – comfort slave

i guess suana doesn’t exist anymore. it was a project of knoxville’s teams‘ sean bowie. i am not the biggest fan of ambient music, but this kid is really good at what he does. he posted this on teams’ soundcloud last week and it’s pure instrumental, catchy goodness and if i happen to be loungin and drinking something out of a tall and skinny glass, this would be my choice song. wednesday means we’ve made it half way through the week, so let’s all put a cherry in something sweet and alcoholic and toast in a barely lit bar somewhere.
