electric owls – cullowhee songs – when i was a flood

this north carolina foursome released a new ep at the beginning of the month. the ep is four easy listening delights. now, this isn’t necessarily challenging music, but it’s darn good. sometimes you just wanna put your feet up and take it easy and this is what you should be listening to while chillaxing with your slippers on, reading a good magazine. this track is my favorite on the new ep. it’s a synthy, banjo-y treat you should turn up if you wanna take a leisurely bike ride to enjoy the autumn foilage or kick back with the latest issue of food and wine (half joking, half serious). www.myspace.com/electricowls

artist of the month

girl talk

the king of the mash up released a new album, all day, this month without a heads, and to the bliss of all his fans, he released it fo freeee on his site illegal art. the pittsburgh sample genius really hit a home run with this one. it is 71 minutes of back to back undeniable fun and if anyone doesn’t find themselves grinning at any given moment during this album, then allow me to take that stick from out yo ass. it’s his fifth album and maybe his most complex. we can be music snobs all we want, but the boy can jam up a dance pawty real good.

the knocks – dancing with the dj

this new york production duo has been releasing quality dance tracks over this past summer. their latest single officially dropped a few days ago and it’s my favorite thus far. i have had quite the gluttonous weekend and need to do a few jumping jacks and laps around the block, to say the least. this song is an instant wake me up and get your booty moving kind of song. there’s even a nice 30 second intro you can stretch it out to and then it’s dance dance dance suckahs. www.myspace.com/itstheknocks

wolf parade go on hiatus

canada’s wolf parade announced at a show in toronto last friday that the group was playing their last show for a while that night… faces fell i’m sure, like mine, when i heard the news. one of the band’s frontmen dan boeckner told their fan site the group was taking an “indefinite hiatus”. whatever indefinite means, i am one sad pumpkin. luckily boeckner’s rad side project handsome furs is releasing a new album next year, but wtf wolf parade, wtf…

flashback of the week

the dandy warhols – thirteen tales from urban bohemia – bohemian like you

it’s 2000. this portland band releases their third album and this gem of a song, which is probably their most recognizable song. although they’re from oregon, they manage to sound british most of the time and this song is a shining example of that. utterly boppable and begging you to sing along, it’s hands down my favorite of theirs and every time i hear it, it’s time to put the drink down and get down. enjoy.

video of the week

the go team – rolling blackouts – t.o.r.n.a.d.o.

the brits are back with their third album early next year. they always manage to do something right, so i’m looking for to it fo sho. this single from the new album is what the title suggests, an aggressive whirlwind of horns and a thumping beat fit for a boxing ring. the video does a great job of matching the song’s energy and is fun as hell to watch. put your hair back cause something fierce is coming your way.

song of day

koudlam – see you all – tonight

well, i am admittedly a year late with this track, but it seems like most people are, too. this cooky and suave frenchmen has been flying deep under the radar outside of france, but better late than never for us. his ep dropped last year and it’s post-punk meets electro meets tropical meets many other glorious things. it’s unique and special, is really what it is. i loved this track immediately and it’s cold this sunday night and cold in his heart and hotel room tonight (as per the lyrics), so it’s a match, if i say so myself. enjoy with a warm beverage. www.myspace.com/koudlam

my disco – little joy – closer

this aussie trio is releasing their third album early next year and yes, we fans would like more noise please. these boys have never been afraid of long, rock solid and rock hard instrumental interludes in their songs. this new single from the new album is not afraid either. it’s thumping and almost tribal at times and definitely minimalism at it’s best. for those with a legal smoke at hand, light one up, and enjoy. www.mydisco.com.au

song of the day

the sway machinery – the house of friendly ghosts – gawad teriamou

members of the yeah yeah yeahs, arcade fire, antibalas, and balkan beat box teamed up a couple of years ago to form this eclectic supergroup. it’s bluegrass meets afro pop meets folk meets the hebrew language. yes, you read that right. it’s kinda brilliant and awesome. alright, it’s totally brilliant and awesome. they added khaira arby to this new single they released this week and it’s a real treat. i am still full with gorging myself like a pig yesterday, so movement is difficult, but my bloated extremities are still tapping along to this quirky and fun as hell tune. i’m sure it’d be more entertaining if i knew hebrew, but i don’t, and the song is so good, i don’t care. www.swaymachinery.com

dog bite – machino machino

gobble gobble friends. it’s the great day of feasting. i hope you find yourself surrounded by meat and potatoes and marshmallows and pie and everything good today. to add some extra spice to an already wonderful day, i offer you this tune from atlanta’s phil jones jr. it is a gauranteed good time packed into three and a half minutes, filled with fuzz and a sunny disposition sure to help your appetite. so thank you, mr. dog bite for adding a little extra deliciousness into today’s many other bites. www.myspace.com/dogusbitus

song of the day

lonely galaxy – ep2 – bible truth depot

i am not necessarily in a somber mood, but i am definitely feeling the slow and soft tunes as of late. london’s harry granger howell, who goes by lonely galaxy, is releasing his second ep this year at the beginning of next month. his first ep proved his proficiency in writing gut wrenching songs fit for a bad break-up or the edge of a cliff. despondent as they are, they are beautiful, the whole lot of them. this track from the new ep is in that lot. it’s gorgeous, sweeping, and full of emotion. grab a tissue and let it out. www.myspace.com/lonelygalaxy

song of the day

arp – the soft wave – from a balcony overlooking the sea

former san franer and now new york’s alexis georgopoulos released a new album in september and if you have not heard, it’s another arresting piece of work from the one-man synth machine and composer. his electronic showmanship is always impressive, but he actually sings on this track. it may be my favorite on the album. the simplicity and tenderness are extra heart wrenching. when cold weather makes you wanna listen to sweeter music, this is just the tune. www.myspace.com/arp001

pina chulada – appropriate stranger

this denver duo is back with a smokin song. it’s sultry and dream-like and tough to not love. they released two versions of the song. both are pretty outstanding. it will depend on your mood, which one you like better. the other is an acoustic version you just want to close your eyes to. it’s like sophie’s choice for me picking a favorite. both are below for your listening pleasure. either one is guaranteed to encourage a happy monday. www.myspace.com/pinachulada

flashback of the week

tears for fears – the hurting – mad world

it’s 1982. these english boys release their debut album. although gary jules does an amazing cover of this single, we forget this song started as a synthy, new wave gem. the guys garnered mainstream success with their second album when “shout” became an instant hit. however, true tears for fears fans know there is much more to the band than their more well known songs. there many days when i prefer this original over the song made famous by donnie darko and many days when i find myself listening to “closest thing to heaven”, “advice for the young at heart”, and there’s always a time for “sowing the seeds of love”.
