flashback of the week

supergrass – mary

it’s 1999. this british quartet releases their third self-titled album. this song was their last single from the album. this video was banned at the time because it was deemed to be too scary. perfect kind of flashback for halloween, eh? it’s an awesome video and although, they are no longer together, they were a really great band with really great songs of which, this song, is definitely one of my favorites.

video of the week

la sera – never come around

katy goodman of vivian girls and all saints day started a side project recently and this 7″ is due out next month. this track on it’s own is a delightful pop song with a nod to the bubbly 50′s sound, but the video is a genius interpretation, perfect for halloween. there’s blood and guts and it’s gruesome and charming, just like a good halloween.

song of the day

balam acab – see birds – see birds (moon)

this new york college kid, alec koone, released his debut ep a couple of months ago and it’s perfect music for halloween. he is a sample king and with this particular track he’s created a haunting and eerie musical landscape ripe for painting the town red with your fellow ghouls and goblins. happy halloween trick or treaters. i hope your faces are painted and your pumpkins are carved. www.myspace.com/thebalamacab

song of the day

total warr – cascades – seasidal tendencies

are you prepping your spooky halloween costume? i hope you are. now, i don’t have something spooky for ya, but i do have something kinda cooky for you to bop to while you are gluing your mustache on or putting on your fangs. these two dudes hail from paris and they are quirky, delightful, not your mother’s pop music. they just released their debut ep and it’s a treat, so trick yourself out to this kids. www.myspace.com/totalwarr

song of the day

regal degal – pretty busy

i am a sucker for post punk. some of my favorite bands of all time come out of this genre, so it’s no surprise i took to these three brooklynites like white on rice. you can hear the wire, joy division, and the talking heads influence in this track ,but it’s not a rip off, which is an accomplishment and i’m an immediate fan. it’s halloween kids, which means getting dressed up or not, depending, but regardless, there’s sure to be some drinking and whiskey pouring, hopefully in some smoke covered, webbed out, dark space. i cannot think of a better way to get the weekend started than with some quality post punk goodness. these boys don’t have a myspace, but check out their blog for more dish.

song of the day

meta gruau – tendre et mauve – nenu-phare

montreal has quite the electro rock scene and these guys are on the bill. these three released their debut album a short while ago and it’s definitely a nod to 80′s synth punk rock with all the nuisances of their indisputable french flare. in short, they kick a lot of ass and this is as hip as it gets. i can’t understand a word he’s saying, but ask me if i care. this track is loud and begging you to put on your red coned hats a la devo and practice your robotic dance moves. www.myspace.com/metagruau

song of the day

augustines – rise ye sunken ships – book of james

i have been a fan of brooklyn’s pela for years and was crushed last year when they announced the band’s break up after lead singer bill mccarthy’s brother took his own life. luckily for us, bill and his former pela’s bassist, eric sanderson, united to finish this album together and grace us with new music. this song is about bill’s brother and is a heartwrencher that’s worth every second. they premiered this song last week at kexp and this is one song not to be missed.

song of the day

hotel mexico – his jewelled letter box – animals strike back

this band is from japan despite their south american influenced name. they just released a debut ep and if you are in the mood to bop around to fuzzed out dreamy guitars, then i’ve got just the tune for you. these guys are really good with a sound all their own. their first single “it’s twinkle” created some buzz for them, but i think track is pretty outstanding, as well “starling, tiger, fox” from the ep. get on board kids and take the train to japan by way of mexico. www.myspace.com/hotelmexico

flashback of the week

hall & oates – big bam boom – out of touch

it’s 1984. this duo releases their twelfth album and this single, which became their fourteenth consecutive top 40 song since 1980. these guys are legend and i have yet to meet anyone who doesn’t own at least one piece of their work. these guys are still touring and in case you have never seen them, it’s one concert no to be missed. this video is an 80′s icon and it still puts a smile on my face.

video of the week

the books – the way out – i didn’t know that

the two dudes added a new new band member this year and released their fourth album. they are sample kings and all of their videos seem to add the missing element to their music when you’re just listening. this video primarily borrows from an old how to golf instructional video and is quite well done and most of all, really quite fun. enjoy.

song of the day

lykke li – get some

sweden’s lykke li is releasing  a new 7″ next month and the two tracks are available for download on her website for the price of an email address. the tunes are wonderful and you’d be a fool not to snatch them. this is the first new stuff we’ve heard from her since her debut in 2008. she’s working on a new album and from the sounds of it, we are all in for a treat.

song of the day

tv girl – if you want it

tv girl is an unsigned duo from san diego making fresh tunes using sweet samples. this particular track samples todd rundgren’s “hello it’s me”, which you’ll recognize immediately. if you had a sloppy weekend like myself, then the lyric’s of this song might ring true for you as well and you can spend sunday grimacing to this spectacular diddly. the california boys have an ep coming out soon, so keep your ears perked for the release. www.myspace.com/tvgirlmusic

bear hands

bear hands – burning bush supper club – crime pays

i try not to double post bands and keep things fresh for you folks, but sometimes, a band is a so good and a song is so good, the competition pales in comparison. such is the case with bear hands’ latest release from their debut record releasing november 2nd. their ep released at the beginning of the year was an exciting indication of where their music is heading and i must say, i am one eager beaver. this track is off the hizzy and i’d be a wanker not to give it its due props. www.myspace.com/bearhandsband

song of the day

maserati – pyramid of the sun – pyramid of the moon

these athens, georgia boys suffered a big loss last year when their drummer unexpectedly died falling down an elevator shaft, but they have been back at work and are releasing a new album next month. they have mastered the purely instrumental and very danceable post-rock they’ve been playing for a decade and i’m feeling extra saucy about getting dirty this weekend, so these guys are my jam today. if you happen to have a sports car, crank this sh*t up, and find yourself a good, long, empty stretch of road to floor it. www.myspace.com/maseratirocks
