kordan – the longing – mirror

this brooklyn trio by way of puerto rico released their first full length album yesterday and i’m hooked. it’s moody. it’s dreamy. it’s melodramatic. it’s awesome. their single from this album is definitely a stand out, although the album as a whole is serious quality. if you saw cut copy on tour a couple of years ago, you are already in the know since they opened for them on tour. if you don’t, turn up your speakers and get on board. www.myspace.com/kordantv

how to dress well – love remains

who woulda thunk that someday someone was gonna take r&b and kill it by making it lo-fi? and by kill it, i mean take off its silk panties one inch at a time and really, truly bring sexy back. brooklyn’s tom krell is the someone i’m talkin bout. i can’t make out half the words he’s saying sometimes, but the haunting, distorted, yet gorgeous music speaks volumes enough and married to the bumpin and grindin beats, it’s one of my favorite releases all year. i have been ending the day pretty consistently with his stunning debut album. and boy, he kills me with that falsetto every friggin time. www.myspace.com/howtodresswellmusic

song of the day

shimmering stars – sun’s going down

this british columbian band of boys is very clearly influenced by 60′s pop. their music does a good job of doubling as a time machine, in a good way. they have nailed the best of their influences, the beach boys and the everly brothers, while making themselves modern and relevant. they’ve got a 7″ coming out soon on french label, almost musique, and if you are in the mood for some easy listening dream pop and luscious harmonies, i’d put on my shiny loafers and get on that 7″. www.myspace.com/starsshimmer

song of the day

ice cream shout – tattooed tears

well known fact – the japanese have become the envy of those desiring the coolest. this quartet from kansai, japan released their debut album earlier this year which features more than a couple of stand out songs, but this new single is an impressive indication of where they might be headed. it’s still dreamy and poppy like the songs on their debut, but is more mature and sounds much more rich with an extra hint of the 80s. in short, i can’t stop listening to it. fyi, the song is about the smiths, cholos, and east of eden. chew on that.  www.myspace.com/icecreamshout

flashback of the week

billy idol – rebel yell – eyes without a face

it’s 1983. billy idol releases his second album as a solo artist and becomes a bona fide super star. although generation x made some great songs, his fame, no doubt was really born when he went solo. rebel yell has my favorite billy idol song of all time, this sexy as hell slow jam i still listen to on repeat more often than not. we all know and love this bleached hair personality and i’m sure more than one of his songs has a soft spot in your hearts.

video of the week

the flaming lips – embryonic – see the leaves

oklahoma’s the flaming lips released their twelfth album last year, their first double album. it’s pretty much agreed upon that they still got the good stuff cause the album is definitely more good than bad, but this video is frackin incredible. i love a naked woman just as much as the next straight man, but it’s really the concept here that takes the cake. enjoy.

song of the day

glasser – ring – let letter

this l.a. one woman electronic wonder, cameron mesirow, has released a couple of pretty awesome eps this year and tomorrow she will officially release her debut full length. to get you psyched for the album’s release, i am featuring a bonus track from said album which is one of my personal favorites from the impressive piece of work. if your weekend was anywhere near the wrecker that mine was, than this sexy and smooth number could be just the remedy to take the edge off what should be a beautiful sunday. www.myspace.com/glasssser

song of the day

maps and atlases – perch patchwork – living decorations (breton remix)

these chicago boys finally released their much anticipated debut full length album a couple of months ago and the album has proven how creative and talented these boys really are. the album, as a whole, is a bit more mellow than their two previous eps, but it’s not a bad move on their part because in the end they’ve succeeded in making a beautiful piece of work. this here remix takes one of my favorite tunes from perch patchwork and does what every great remix should, make it a better song without stripping any of the original integrity. time to get sexy weekend revelers. www.myspace.com/mapsandatlases

song of the day

the holidays – post paradise – broken bones

this sdyney quartet released their debut album today. clap claps for them. they have released two eps since 2007 and are finally gracing us with a proper full length. it’s jam after jam of get off your couch and move your smooth money shaker tunage and their first single, which has really grown on me with repeat listens, is a great introduction to the album. the bass on this song can only be appreciated with proper speakers, so put on your phones of choice and get your smooth jam on right for friday night. www.myspace.com/theholidays

song of the day

juston stens and the get real gang – falling

juston stens used to be the drummer for beloved dr. dog. he left the band earlier this year to pursue his own music and damn if his solo ep ain’t a gem of a debut. he’s got a wonderful roy orbison quality about his voice that is smooth like buttah and his music is definitely a throw back to that era. this is music you can reminiscence to. this tune is especially sweet and if you’ve got a bottle of wine, pop that sucker open, and unwind. www.myspace.com/totalposermusic

selebrities – ladies man effect – time

this unsigned new york city trio is straight up, unabashed new wave in every neon sort of way and they are just in time for my cut off gloves. their debut ep is a free download on their tumblr and if i were you, i’d pull up my knee highs and grab it. they do a cover of technotronics’ “move this”. did you ears just perk up? oh yeah. it’s the middle of the week and time to shake it up ladies and gents. www.myspace.com/selebrities

parlovr – heaven/hell/big/love – hell, heaven

pronounced like parlor, this band made up of three of montreal’s loudest dudes who released their kick ass debut album earlier this year and hoorah, are releasing a new ep next month. i already know it’s gonna be a treat for those of you wanting a good opportunity to whip some hair or head and thrash around to hellah good power pop goodness. it’s epic and catchy and loud and fun and well, the superlatives could go on and on. oh yeah, get excited. www.myspace.com/parlourmontreal

screaming females – castle talk – i don’t mind it

this jersey trio has been around for half of this decade. they just released their fourth album last week and it seems they are just getting better and better. they are currently touring and will be sharing the stage with old favorites ted leo and the pharmacists next month. this is solid punk rock in the best way, which only new brunswickians can offer. this tune has a  great guitar riff and a bass that makes you want to bop your way into an equally solid week. www.myspace.com/screamingfemales
