song of the day

the war on drugs – future weather – comin’ through

these three philly dudes are releasing a new 8 song ep, future weather, on october 26th. their first album was really quite a stunner, so expectations are high, but this first release is a promising lead. labor day weekend is fast approaching – hoorah, so here’s some quality americana tunage to get you in the mood to celebrate our country’s laborers. www.myspace.com/thewarondrugs

song of the day

celebration – hello paradise – shelter

katrina ford is a well known bad ass, as a guest voice on all of tv on the radio’s albums and former vocalist for gothy and savage noise-rock band jaks and manic rock band love life. her latest band, celebration, is releasing a new album this winter and the four tunes already released digitally on their bandcamp is enough to get a fan’s panties all in a bunch because each track is a stand out. this song is my favorite of the bunch and i hope it brings you into a new week with a certain gusto which only her voice can induce. www.myspace.com/celebrationcelebration

artist of the month

sufjan stevens

it had been five years since the detroit native released a new album. then a couple of weeks ago, he shocked us all by spontaneously releasing a new digital ep, all the delighted people. and then last week, announced he’ll be releasing a new full length, the age of adz, in october. the shock factor coupled with the new album announcement is quite the marketing strategy. all the delighted people is a substantial and heavy ep but worth every second, especially when it is a reminder that his full length is just around the corner. as a long time fan, the new music in hand and the promise of more new music coming soon from this genius has made the month all that more tolerable.

flashback of the week

air – moon safari – sexy boy

it’s 1998. this french duo releases their debut album and move over mr. bald-headed moby. electronic music found two new faces and this album is still at the top of my all time favorites list. my love for them was solidified when i had the pleasure of seeing them live at the hollywood bowl backed with the l.a. philharmonic and they murdered it. to this day, still one of my favorite live concerts ever. i cannot say enough about this album, this song, and this video. amazing, amazing, amazing.

video of the week

dead man’s bones – pa pa power

ryna gosling’s and zach sheild’s debut release of their spooky themed album last year surprised us all by being pretty awesome. this 12 minute short film/video for one of my favorites from the album is spot on for their vibe as they capture wonderful nuances at a senior home with an eerie twist. enjoy.

song of the day

coma cinema – blue suicide – business as usual

matt cothran, aka coma cinema, of south carolina is releasing a new album later this year and it promises to be a winner of epic indie proportions. he shares a pretty cool blog with favorites of mine kiss kiss fantastic. the good company is a testament to his taste and talent. this tune is quirky in all the right ways to support it’s somber lyrics and the whole thing builds to quite the satisfying end. in short, this sunday song is worth your business. www.myspace.com/comacinema

song of the day

the naked & famous – passive me, aggressive you – young blood

this five piece is the hot ticket in new zealand right now and it could be the alluring promise of the band’s name, but mostly because their jams are power pop anthems ripe for the debaucheries of summer. this song debuted at number one on new zealand’s charts and it’s easy to hear why. think passion pit meets kick ass female vocals. their debut album is out in a couple of weeks. crank up your speakers, celebrate your youth, and do something crazy this weekend. www.myspace.com/thenakedandfamous

song of the day

summer camp – round the moon

this london duo are releasing their aptly titled young ep in a couple of weeks. you will hear, they are rapt with love for john hughes’ movies and their nostalgia is a great cause of inspiration for the pair because their tunage is so delicious, it makes me want to be a teenager again, and that is not a feeling i come by often.  this song is a charming pop gem sure to bring out your inner molly ringwald or judd nelson to dance all night. www.myspace.com/summercampmusic

song of the day

fiveng – give me a taste

this san francisco dude just dropped his debut single on new label, beachtapes, a few days ago and it’s got the indie world a buzz. a one-man bedroom pop wonder, nicholas ng is begging you to drop your hanging file folders, grab a towel, and pedal to the beach. who needs a job when you have sunny tunage like this? do yourself a solid and grab this over at his bandcamp and make it a four day weekend. www.myspace.com/fiveng

song of the day

givers – in my eyes

there must be something special in the water in lousiana cause these five southerners here are jamming on it right. they are certainly high on life if nothing else and great for this heat wave that’s holding the west coast in a sweaty grip to remind us summer is still in effect and you still got time to get your bounce on. they’ll be touring with ra ra riot in the fall and if i were you, i’d get in line.  www.myspace.com/giversmusic

song of the day

bishop morocco – last year’s disco guitars

i might be one of the biggest fans of 80′s british anything and this duo from toronto have nailed gloomy 80′s new wave on the head without sounding like a pair of posers. they released their debut a couple of months ago and anytime i wanna feel like a good throwback to the better times of sexy melancholy looks and original punk gangsters, i put this on, and today i am dawning my alter ego’s mohawk and watching shane meadows “this is england”. www.myspace.com/bishopmorocco

song of the day

jesse woods – moon rocks – sparks

this austin crooner recently got some notice with his cover of neon indian’s “mind drips” which was so good, i turned to his solo stuff. he released a new ep last week and it’s a soulful moving piece of work indeed. it’s folk meets country meets a hint of west coast air and it’s the perfect music to relax your busy heart and make you wanna play hookie to take a ride into the country with you, yourself, and your easy spirit. here’s to a beautiful week ahead. www.myspace.com/jessewoodsband

flashback of the week

the sugarcubes – life’s too good – deus

it’s 1988. this icelandic power group releases their debut album after forming two years prior and after lead singer, bjork gave birth to her son, whose father was sugarcubes’ guitarist pór eldon. the band broke up two albums and four years later. it’s no surprise bjork went on to have a legend of a solo career cause, let’s face it, she’s so incredible, it’s kind of ridiculous. she was a mere 23 at the time of this video and even then, all hail bjork.

video of the week

toro y moi – causers of this – low shoulder

this song is definitely one of my favorite tracks on his album. this video is a clever story of a young girl getting a little somepin somepin slipped into her diner coffee. the older woman cast is well and some of her more satanic faces are certainly images i wouldn’t want floating around my head at night. enjoy!

song of the day

diego garcia – you were never there

remember nyc’s elefant circa 2003? heck i sure do. i’ve worn out their debut cd with heavy rotation in the beginning of this decade. the band broke up this summer, but front man diego is venturing on a solo career fueled by his latin flare, and damn if it ain’t sexy.  his first single is so romantic and swoon inducing, i’d be sure find the closest hammock if i were you and a mimosa. it’s a shame elefant has disbanded, but it’s certainly a blessing to us that this here talent has not gone to waste. www.myspace.com/diegogarciamusic
