artist of the month

future islands

these baltimore boys have been touring up a storm to promote their latest album, in the evening air and they are kiiiiling it. this album is so motherf*in good, it puts any naysayers to shame. the album is what the boys in the band call “post-wave” and it’s a pretty darn accurate description of the tunage, new wave meets post-punk in a beautiful marriage of whimsical and heartfelt emotion. the album is solid to say the least and worthy of a listen if you have been living under an indie rock. pun intended.

song of the day

his clancyness – how it’s done in italy

summer is sweet, eh? well, so is this darling cover of danish buddha + mi’s diddly by native canadian, turned italian, his clancyness. it drips of honey and must taste like dulce de leche flavored gelato if its notes were swallowed. simple and loveable, this track might be the perfect gateway to a good mid-day in the middle of the week daydream to get you through the 9 – 5.

song of the day

miniature tigers – fortress – gold skull

these four brooklynites are releasing their sophomore album next month and if i were you, i’d put july 27th on your calendar so you don’t forget to do yourself a solid and remember to get the damn thing. these boys have been around the indie block and are currently on tour with the spinto band. this track was produced by neon indian’s alan palomo and it’s a warm summer beaut with its bleeps and solid harmonies which are sure to get your grinning from ear to ear.

song of the day

fiction – big things

these four unsigned london boys are no doubt having a shit load of fun making whacky, yet wonderfully endearing and very listenable uncharted post-punk tunage that people are drooling over. this demo song is reminiscent of early talking heads. it’s kraut meets tropical meets figurative smudgy guyliner. how’s that for a monday? good indeed. www.myspace.com/fictionlondon

flashback of the week

mark morrison – return of the mack – return of the mack

it’s 1997. this english r&b crooner saw a lot of success in the uk, but this single was his only u.s. hit. it reached #2 in the states while ironically, morrison was jailed for carrying a stun gun onto an airplane. so original gangster… this song samples tom tom club’s “genius of love” and this song is so 90′s r&b, i gotta say, the whole thing is genius. if you have forgotten, turn up your speakers and get your groove slide on.

video of the week

tobacco – super gum

fans of black moth super rainbow know their leader has started a solo project a couple of years ago called tobacco with an album out now called maniac meat. this song is not on the album, but part of a series of promotional videos for the album which are, nasty, to say the least. this video is nothing short of gross and definitely not suitable to stream unless you are in the safety and comfort of your own home, but somehow its raunchiness fits the song well and the whole thing works.

song of the day

oberhofer – o0Oo0Oo – i could go

bedroom tunage is quite the stir as of late, and 19-year-old brad oberhofer is in the whirlwind of it all. once a tacoma, wa citizen, he now resides in brooklyn with the rest of the cool people of the world and the pre-order for his upcoming ep, to be released in august, is number on insound.com. i’m impressed young lad. bedroom indie pop don’t get much better than this. www.myspace.com/oberhofermusic

song of the day

casiokids – topp stemning på lokal bar – fot i hose

these norwegian lo-fi electro wonders just released a deluxe version of their latest and greatest album and it’s just a reminder of how awesome they are. now, i don’t care that i don’t understand a lick of anything they’re singing about cause the jams are so good. put on your shiny dancing shoes and kick them up old school watch with a calculator on it style.

song of the day

unouomedude – marsh – buildings

904 represent!!! there is hardly even a leaf in jacksonville, florida that isn’t bored, meaning, it’s a snore of a town, and trust me. i grew up there. i know. but i’ll be damned – long after i have left the 904, this young lad has risen from the stench of the armpit of america and pumped out some hip tunage. i’ll.be.damned. pronounced “you know you owe me dude”, unouomedude makes hazy dreamy pop too good for a dude from a beach town as exciting as tar on a rooftop. happy friday and major props this kid in good ole’ j-ville.  www.myspace.com/unouomedude

song of the day

chappo – plastique universe – come home

this unsigned new york duo is f.u.n. they are making their rounds around the world wide web. this new ep, plastique universe, is a great departure from their other zanier stuff, and boy, to say they knocj it out of the ballpark with this spacey song could be the understatement of the century. i love a good falsetto and this track makes you wanna jam your adam’s apple up in your junk and sing “oh oh oh oh!”.  www.myspace.com/chappomusicnyc

song of the day

get people – diety

get people – light

back to back humfink firsts… i am so torn between these two songs by this unsigned london trio, i am saying f* it – put em both up and stop sweatin the small stuff. so today, the song of the day is songs of the day. whoah. i know. here’s the video for “diety” and their track “light”. i am sufficiently enamored with both. they are tropical electro delights and it’s sophie’s choice making a choice between the two, so here are both children.

watch the new interpol ‘lights’ video

holy cow. a video. yes. it’s been one exciting thing after another, as of late regarding my favorite nyc band. and i’m delighted that their first video from their new album is upon us. you can download the hd version here.

a new clinic album out in the fall

our crazy mask wearing liverpool boys are back with a new album, bubblegum, in october and their website states it’s “a rewiring of clinic’s trademark hyped up sound. in place of churning riffs and wired vocals is a dream state of harpsichords, dulcimers and strings. melody and softness combine with the band’s unique internal logic to produce a record of pop beauty.” strings? harpsichords? hook, line, and sinker. i’m sold. sign me up. stick a fork… all that good stuff.

song of the day

kiss kiss fantastic – beautiful mess

this across the country duo are so good, they are trailblazing a humfink first – they are the first band to make my song of the day list twice. (clap claps all around) the california/florida girl/guy team have sent me their new song and it’s so good, heck – who am i to keep all to myself.  www.myspace.com/kisskissfantastic
