artist of the month

crystal castles

i have been listening to their new album all month and it’s ridiculous and getting even more ridiculous as i’m wearing out my speakers with it. this album could have been a failure with all the concert canceling, madonna t-shirt controversy, and what nots. there was real concern of it being a hot mess. but fuck that. it’s a bloody brilliant noisy fuck you, i’m awesome, kind of album. i heart you crystal castles.

song of the day

interpol – lights

their new album is probably the most exciting upcoming event for me this year. i friggin LOVE this band. (keep me in mind, i never use caps and i just did. i’m that serious.) they are in my top three of all time. yeah, go ahead and judge me. well, they released this single from their upcoming fourth album and i have been giving it  some good quality listening over the last couple of days and goddamn i love this band and this song is dramatic, epic – it’s interpol. nough said.

song of the day

the hundred in the hands – this desert – sleepwalkers

this brooklyn duo is releasing their debut ep next month and they are on a roll. their previous single “dressed in dresden” was a winner and this track from the ep is gold. they channeled the best of french pop and post-punk sounds and have successfully achieved my acclaimed repeat button status. smear your eyeliner and get psyched for the upcoming weekend.

song of the day

the silver seas – chateau revenge – the best thins in life

this nashville band, formerly the bees u.s., is releasing their next album july 6th and this single from the new album is fun fun fun. these guys are well known for having an awesome retro sound and  this track is no different. hall and oates comes to mind and that is a damn good thing.

no summer is complete without a kick ass show at the hollywood bowl. this september 18th lucky californians in the l.a. area will get a triple threat kind of treat. phoenix, grizzly bear, and girls will take the famous stage. kings of leon and she and him will also be playing the bowl in the early summer.

song of the day

pure ecstasy – easy

i’m having a lethargic week, so here’s another one for those slow moments. it’s a joyful, lo-fi, beautifully crafted delight though. it’s from austin band, pure ecstasy, which i’m hoping is either a reference to said recreational drug or unsaid bedtime pleasures. as of late, they’ve been releasing 7″s on memory tapes’ and air france’s label, acephale. see if this doesn’t make your eyes roll back your head. the last minute and a half is reverb at its juiciest.

02 heart is strange
03 dust devil

song of the day

how to dress well – can’t see my own face  - decisions

this brooklyn based home recording lo-fi r&b crooner (odd, but trust me, accurate description) has been self releasing a slew of eps over the last months and let’s just say, keep it coming tom krell. this is as gorgeous as gorgeous gets.

video of the week

dosh – tommy – airlift

dosh, real name martin luther king chavez dosh, has released five albums and is now officially an electronic music guru. fans of andrew bird are sure to know his name and tunage since they are long time collaborators. his latest video here is a colorful depiction about the art of letting go. i certainly could use a reminder of that.

song of the day

white hinterland – kairos – icarus

casey dienel released her sophmore album as white hinterland last month and it’s a wonderful step in the right direction, i think. it’s funky, soulful, and a perfect album for sundays. not to mention her voice is incredible and very soothing for a harsh hangover.

my bloody valentine – isn’t anything – feed me with your kiss

it’s 1989. my bloody valentine releases their debut album and shoegazing is on the map. they are classic. they are brutally good. period.

song of the day

arms – ep – heat and hot water

this ex harlem shakes brooklyn shaker just released new crazy good tracks for free download and it’s an exciting introduction to their forthcoming new full length album. i’m still bummed about the disbandment of harlem shakes, but something good always comes out of the darkness eh?

song of the day

band of horses – infinite arms – factory

i liked their first single they released from the new album, but i was secretly not loving it. and then i heard this single from the new album and it didn’t shake my shorts the first time, not even the second time, but after a good week of listening, (out of my loyalty to band) i have come around and officially love this song. clearly, the strings won in the end.

song of the day

olafur arnalds – …and they have escaped the weight of darkness – tunglið

because it’s been rainy and cold in l.a. and because this song fits the mood perfectly, but mainly because it’s a beaut of a song, let’s take it down a notch. it’s hard to believe this icelandic multi-instrumentalist wonder used to be in a metal band, but we all started somewhere, right? his second full length album releases next month and it’s one to add to your collection for those softer reflective moments.

voxtrot breaking up

:( this austin band is only five years old. with one great album and three great eps to their name, they  have announced on their website, they are ending the voxtrot indie reign. frontman ramesh srivastava made this statement, “the career path of voxtrot was truly one of long, simmering build, explosion, and almost instantaneous decay. slowly, i am learning to replace any feelings of regret with positive memories of how amazing the whole thing was, and how it has, in an unexpected way, fortified my character.” a final note to look on the bright side – the band is starting a farewell tour next month. check them out and bid adieu.
