video of the week

frightened rabbit – the winter of mixed drinks – nothing like you

this is the second video for this single from their upcoming album, the winter of mixed drinks. in my personal opinion, it’s better than the first even though it looks like they shot it on a home camcorder. meaning – although the first one is pretty and had a budget, this video has creativity, which is far more interesting than swirling lights, yes? regardless the song is still awesome and this video serves it’s awesomeness well.

grave babies – screaming

these unsigned seattle band is killing me, in a good way.  they have an ep called deathface out and some demo tunage, songs with titles like “eating babies”, “gouge your eyes out”, “skeletal shades”, and “drugs and blood”. i mean… how can you not listen? did i mention they’re awesome? combine joy division with the themes of dead man’s bones times ten. they’ll be playing sxsw, so check ‘em out and bring your crosses.

sxsw screening new david byrne documentary

ride, ride, roar is the name of david byrne’s documentary following his huge 2008/2009 tour for the album everything that happens will happen today he released with brian eno., a tour which he brought a badass dance troupe with him to perform with the songs. sxsw will be screening it next month. lovers of talking heads, i’m sure there are many,  and brian eno, again, i’m sure there are many, will get a kick out of watching the legends at their best. check out the trailer and freak out.

thom yorke names side band and announces tour

for those of us who have been to a thom yorke show and seen the anonymous marquee, we get how exciting this news is. he and his non-radiohead band members have named themselves, atoms for peace. atoms for peace was an eisenhower speech and program in the 50s with goals to peacefully produce nuclear energy and aid countries in the development of atomic power. atoms for peace is also a song on yorke’s solo album, eraser. now we can finally call mr. yorke, nigel godrich, joey waronker, mauro refoscoand, and  flea something other than thom yorke’s band. in addition to playing coachella, they have schedule 8 shows in major u.s. cities for the month of april and flying lotus will open. weeeeerd.

song of the day

ha ha tonka – novel sounds of the nouveau south – close every valve to your bleeding heart

this missouri band has proclaimed themselves as “foot stompin’ indie rock” and that’s just what it is. novel sounds of the nouveau south is a wonderful follow up to their debut album, buckle in the bible belt. fans of kings of leon will feel at home with the sound of these kick ass foot stompin’ fellows. enjoy with pbr.

public image ltd. touring north america

it has been 18 years, let me repeat, 18 years since public image ltd. has played in north america. if i were born 18 years ago, i’d be able to buy cigaerettes now and smoking my way to college. they will make their comeback at this year’s coachella april 16th and now they have announced a north american tour to boot. holy.cow. is right. it’s been 30 years since they first reached the u.s. on american bandstand, if you can believe. they’ll start the tour the day after coachella in san francsico and will finish in new york in may after 16 scheduled shows. if i can hear “this is not a love song” live, i might just have to do something crazy.

song of the day

zola jesus – stridulum – night

this song is goosebumps incarnate. this is one dark and talented lady.  stridulum, the follow up to the spoils, promises to be a goth goddess’ rise to fame, or at least a lot more people knowing who she is. the spoils was a great album, but jesus, this song is a wrencher and i’m looking forward to the forthcoming ep like a blood thirsty creature of the night.

flashbacks

the walker brothers – the sun ain’t gonna shine anymore

it’s 1966. i’m a mod machine in my pilgrim shoes and bell bottomed corduroys and i’m having a smoke. my cigarette boxes are officially a constant reminder that smoking is, in fact, hazardous to my health, but i’m still smokin like a chimney. smoking helps the stress. doesn’t look like we are getting out of vietnam any time soon. there are more troops there than ever. it’s a stressful world with race riots, the black panthers, protests, martin luther king, the first orbits to the moon, dna coding, france leaving nato, and coups left and right. but the beach boys and the beatles are having a solid time. apparently john lennon thinks they’re bigger than jesus. them and julie andrews. i wouldn’t mind not hearing any song from the sound of music ever again. i don’t care that it won an oscar. i liked afraid of virginia wollf better. big year for the ladies, too. mom’s are rejoicing over the first disposable diaper, the pill being deemed safe to use, and the handsome william shatner on the new show star trek. enough chatting, back to valley of the dolls.
