tiny victories – those of us still alive – lost weekend

this brooklyn duo is set to release their debut ep next month and this lead track is weekend worthy fun-ness. it’s got tons of energy and anthemy melodies loaded with synths. in short, the song shines and if you are planning a romp or two over the weekend, turn this sucker up, and skip a doo. www.facebook.com/pages/tiny-victories

song of the day

holy esque – rose

these boys are from glasgow and recently joined forces with kevin burleigh, who’s worked with glasvegas (another stellar glasgow band), to lay down this track. the roughness of the lead vocals is spot on for this song and the drama is all time. they definitely have similarities to glasvegas, but that’s certainly not a bad thing in this case. www.facebook.com/holyesque

theesatisfaction – awe naturale – do you have time

the seattle duo are releasing their debut album this march on subpop. the ladies have major attitude and their off-kilter r&b and hip hop flair are seriously cool and a breathe of fresh air. they’ve provided backing vocals for shabazz palaces, so you might have heard their vox before, but this time they are on their own, kicking ass, and taking names. www.theesatisfaction.com

song of the day

trust -trst – sulk

we featured the toronto duo last year when they released their first single last spring and now they are set to release their debut full-length next month on arts & crafts and it sounds like their gothy dark synths will not disappoint. this is their lead single and it’s perfectly moody with the right amount of 80′s gloom. www.myspace.com/trst

matthew dear – headcage – in the middle (i met you there) (feat. johnny pierce)

matthew dear’s new ep dropped last week and a surprise track is his duet with the drums’ johnny pierce. it’s hands down the ep’s standout. it’s rich and layered and the boys’ vocals really do complement each other. set this tune for your morning alarm and you’re guaranteed to have a beautiful day. www.matthewdear.com

japan – adolescent sex

it’s 1978. the british androgynous lads release their debut album. it’s a highly overlooked and fantastic piece of work. their new romantic look and glam-rock combo make them one of the sexiest bands ever. not to mention when you google japan and adolescent sex you get all kinds of xxx search results on google. forward thinking on their part?

video of the week

nat baldwin – people changes – weights

dirty projectors’ nat baldwin released his new album last summer. this new video for “weights” stars a horse, yes, a real life horse, selling its personal items at a yard sale. the video has a somber tone that suits the song well and really, there isn’t anything more endearing than a talking and strawberry-chopping horse with a gorgeous mane. enjoy!

song of the day

radiohead – fat girl

the band’s 1986 demos have been floating around for a hot minute, but when the new music flow is slow i find myself going back to their uber lo-fi demos and smiling a big one. they were called on a friday back in the day and were bouncy and ever loveable. there’s no better day to enjoy thom channeling his best morrissey than on a lazy sunday. check the rest of the demos on at ease.

song of the day

coco morier – explosions – ambulance

this l.a. doll has ventured out on her own. she used to be in a electronic band called electrocute and has written songs for britney spears. let’s all forget that last fact and forgive her because she’s also working with mike snow now, but most importantly this track from her ep is supreme. it’s a little bat for lashes and a whole lot of sexy. www.facebook.com/cocomorier

song of the day

lower dens – nootropics – brains

the baltimore bunch are back with a new album this may and they’ve just dropped this stellar single that everyone’s instantly got on repeat. it’s good. in fact, it’s really good, hypnotizing, and driving with an irresistible dreamlike quality. as always, jana hunter’s vocals leave nothing to be desired, they are spot on. www.lowerdens.com

song of the day

black marble – weight against the door – pretender

these broolynites boys released their debut ep yesterday. it’s cold wave that is delectably dark with bass lines that would make the 80′s proud. their sound is lo-fi and perfect for a chilly night. go somewhere seedy and drink a cold one with your best eyelinered friend to enjoy. www.blackmarblenyc.com

song of the day

apes and horses – miracle

these boys are from paris and have opened for wu lyf. that’s pretty much all i know about them, oh and their live performance video of a song called “the fields” on youtube might be one of the prettiest songs i’ve heard in a while. “miracle”, below, has been out for a while, but we americans aren’t hip to things french, so enjoy that as well. it’s also enchanting with bowie-esque sexy baritone vocals stylings. www.facebook.com/apesandhorses

song of the day

sleigh bells – reign of terror – comeback kid

the ever loud and proud brooklynites released another track, their first official singe from their upcoming sophomore album releasing next month. it’s slightly poppier than their previous tunes, but it’s certainly noisy and just as lovable as anything else the two have done. turn up your speakers kids. www.reignofterror.tv

song of the day

bear in heaven – i love you, it’s cool – the reflection of you

the broolynites announced the release of their new album last month and now they’ve got a single from said album. the synths are in the forefront on this track and the vibe is definitely a little 80′s, but retains the classic bear in heaven sound that we love. the album is set for a release on april 3rd, so mark those calendars. www.bearinheaven.com

it’s 1996. gruff rhys and his fellow welsh boys release their debut album, after the now famous actor rhys evans departed from the band. the furry bunch have released nine albums to date and gruff has sustained quite the respectable solo career, securing their place in music history as one of the greatest bands to come out of the uk. below is their debut performance on jool holland’s later.
